Since I had splashed through the very last tributary crossing, I left my grungy socks on from the prior day so they could be the ones getting wet, then I found a way across without getting my feet wet and so didn't have to drag all that extra water uphill. I had a good look at the sign still mounted on a tree and couldn't make it mean anything other than the old ditch for the trail up. Animals are short cutting a way to the ditch next to the sign and that remains the only trail-like thing to see. Then there was the challenge of the log. Starting off at the eastern end of the Salmon Summit Trail, the far end of the trail that was a pushing, pulling, turn and press with the pack, swim through oaks until I got tired, and then turn south for some ridge walking and to visit an old fire lookout. From there, down to North Fork Trinity River and Grizzly Creek to visit a selection of old cabins. Once done with that, much climbing and then some ridge walking back. The trouble was we had no idea what shape the trails are in. In the elevation profile, I thought the one along the river looked iffy. Climbing up mysteriously alternates between good and bad. We had the coldest night of the winter with the temperature hitting -3°C on Daniil's thermometer. Mine only got down to 27.5°F just after I started breakfast. He also complained that there was moisture in the early night coming down the mountain and settling on his tent. I had my tarp up against the wind (which didn't gust or even blow much more a little after sunset) leaving my gear vulnerable to wet air from above, but noticed none. In the bright morning sun, we headed up Big Hill Road to the Mill Creek Lakes Trailhead (car passable except the last mile or two could be a challenge) once more, this time for an overnight. What will the trails be like? That's a bit of a mystery and we had a loop to try them out. (I actually had a bigger one, but Daniil nixxed reduced it to this minimal one saying something about a dense pile of trees for miles where it dropped low.) I've been tracing out trails in USGS's elevation profile, which isn't quite the gold standard of where trails go, but it's better than the lines the Forest Service provides much of the time. Daniil wanted to do a survey of the terrain, but the fact of the cabin suggests it's pretty safe hiking in winter. We only hit snow on the road shortly before the trailhead around 4000 feet, although the trailhead parking was totally covered in white. We started out with the snowshoes on our backs. Snow exists, as we see at the trailhead. Into the wilderness that started a quarter mile back down the road according to the map. Soggy trail with a little running water at the second sign for the Trinity Alps Wilderness. The morning wasn't freezing and the trail ran with water. We passed several very seasonal streams and the ones marked on the map tended to need a well placed rock to keep the feet out of the water. We had plenty of time to do it, so I could record, on this final day of summer, the few flowers we had passed on the way up. Click for interactive map After finding that we had selected a camp site with a view of Mount Shasta, we got ourselves fed for the morning explorations. Dawn light on the clouds around Mount Shasta. We got ourselves together for a little day hiking and headed out. Judging we were already to the point of starting the cross country required to get to Little Bear Lake, we headed out into the somewhat trackless, but cairn rich, granite. Up on the granite on the far side of the creek from Bear Lake Trail. We generally followed along ledges. A lot of uphill on granite with a lot of views of Mount Shasta. There are a lot of possible trails, all a little hard, but most not too hard. We didn't all follow the same trail sections, cairns, or ledges, but we stayed pretty close. We could all see each other. Click for interactive map Daniil decided to go up Bear Creek for a couple nights, allowing a hike about on the middle day. Bear Lake Trail is just south of Tangle Blue and is surrounded by sufficient contour lines to make it look interesting. Indeed, I got interested in going there when looking over the Tangle Blue route, so I went for it. We had a big group along this time, 6 of us and 2 dogs! The plan was an afternoon hike up to find a camp, a day probably devoted to hiking up to Little Bear Lake and around the area, then back down after another night's rest. Signed Bear Lakes Trailhead.
